I started making the first games on my journey in 2013, with the desire to elevate the products around my worldview and I have been and will continue that noble mission.

More than ten years have passed in the blink of an eye, and this is where I record the notes of my career.

A Decade of Game Design: Reflecting on My Journey

As I sit back and reflect on my career in the video game industry, it’s hard to believe that it’s been over 10 years since I first stepped into this dynamic and ever-evolving world. From the very beginning, I knew that game design was more than just a job to me – it was a passion that I would pursue with the same enthusiasm and dedication every day. Today, as a game designer with more than a decade of experience, I find myself looking back on the incredible journey I’ve had, the lessons I’ve learned, and the challenges I’ve faced. It’s a journey that has been as thrilling as any game I’ve ever worked on, filled with moments of creativity, collaboration, and growth.

When I started, like many others in the industry, I was driven by a deep love for games and a fascination with how they were made. Initially, I worked on smaller projects, where I learned the fundamentals of game design and honed my skills. I was fortunate enough to have mentors who guided me along the way, offering invaluable advice on how to think about mechanics, storytelling, and player experience. Over time, I realized that game design is not just about creating fun experiences but also about balancing the creative and technical aspects of development.

Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of working on a variety of projects across multiple platforms, from mobile games to AAA titles. Each project taught me something new about the design process, from conceptualizing ideas to seeing them come to life. Early on, I was mainly focused on the design aspect – crafting engaging gameplay loops, developing interesting mechanics, and ensuring that the player experience was seamless and immersive. However, as time went on, I expanded my skill set to include knowledge in other key areas of game development, such as development, art, and marketing.

In terms of development, I learned to work closely with programmers to ensure that the design elements I envisioned could be realized through code. I became familiar with the technical constraints of different platforms and learned to optimize designs to ensure they ran smoothly across a variety of devices. This hands-on experience gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by developers and reinforced the importance of collaboration between different departments. Understanding the programming side of things has also made me a more efficient designer, as I now have a better grasp of what is feasible within certain technical constraints and how to iterate on ideas while maintaining a balance between creativity and practicality.

On the artistic side, I worked closely with artists to bring the visual aspects of the game to life. While I may not be an artist myself, I developed a strong appreciation for how art and design work together to create a cohesive game world. From designing characters and environments to choosing the right color palette and visual style, I learned that art is not just about aesthetics – it’s about evoking the right emotions and enhancing the player’s experience. By collaborating with talented artists, I gained insights into how visual elements can enhance gameplay and storytelling, making the overall experience more immersive and memorable.

Marketing, an area I hadn’t initially considered in-depth, became an important part of my skillset as I moved forward in my career. I realized that a game’s success is not solely determined by its design or quality; how it is marketed and presented to the public can be just as critical. I began to work closely with marketing teams to help position the games I was designing in a way that resonated with players. I gained experience in analyzing market trends, identifying target audiences, and creating narratives around the game that would capture players’ imaginations. Whether it was crafting compelling trailers, writing blog posts, or engaging with the gaming community through social media, I came to understand the importance of building a brand and fostering a relationship with players before, during, and after a game’s release.

Looking back, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career has been the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented individuals. Game development is, by nature, a highly collaborative process. It’s a team effort that requires input from people with diverse skill sets, from designers and developers to artists, sound designers, writers, and marketers. Each person brings their unique perspective to the table, and it’s through this collaboration that great games are born. I’ve learned that communication is key in this environment – it’s not enough to have a good idea; you need to be able to articulate it clearly and be open to feedback. Working with such a diverse group of professionals has not only made me a better designer but also a better team player and leader.

As I reflect on my decade-long career, I’m proud of the projects I’ve bee
